Displaying your tree
Once you have chosen the tree, decide whether you will set it up as soon as you get home or keep it outside until you are ready.
Once you have chosen the tree, decide whether you will set it up as soon as you get home or keep it outside until you are ready.
If you are not putting the tree up right away, keep it protected from the sun and the wind.
Before the tree goes in its stand, make a fresh 1/4 to 1 inch cut across the base of the trunk so it can drink. Use a stand that holds a gallon of water or more. A tree may take between 2 pints and a gallon a day, so check the water often. If the water drops too low, dried sap can seal the cut in three to six hours and the tree will drink less. Keep the tree away from heat. Test the lights before they go on the tree, and unplug them before bed or when you leave the house.
